Watching in the abyss, over the Faxaflói bay, Grótta stands with its breathtaking beach and flourishing wildlife. The beautiful location lies in the north-westernmost part of the Greater Reykjavík Area. The region became a nature reserve in 1974.

The lighthouse at Grótta sits on a small island at the tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula . The town of Seltjarnarnes is easier to visit than to say. The town is bordered with Reykjavik and is one of the oldest settlements in Iceland. Just a few hundred years ago, Seltjarnarnes was much bigger and more important than Reykjavik.

The lighthouse and the couple of buildings on Grótta tend to be shut, and swimming is hardly advisable, but the scenery alone is ample reward for a visit. Grótta is also where Björk wrote Vulnicura opener 'Stonemilker', returning to the site to shoot the song's 360° virtual reality music video with Andrew Thomas Huang.

When admiring the view, be aware of the tide change to avoid becoming stranded on what turns into a little island. Driving to the lighthouse is easy and the little parking lot is free. Additionally you could catch the 11 bus from downtown, walking takes approximately 40 minutes along the paved Sculpture and Shore Walk.
